Orchid Dendrobium
There are quite a few decisions to make once a gardener takes it upon himself to care for an orchid. First, he must ask himself if the dedication is there. Second, it’s time to decide which pretty flower he wants! Aesthetics are a big part of orchid care and the decision to take care for an orchid in your home, so you should always take a careful look at each orchid variety and decide for yourself what type appeals to you the most.
This way, the rewarding bloom, when it finally comes around, will bring out the feelings that you had hoped for all along, and give you a reason to continue to care for an orchid. As a word of advice about all orchid varieties, most gardeners will buy the plants that have already been grown from a seedling and are already capable of producing a flower. This is because a true seedling will take as long as five years to produce its first bloom, which is too long for most folks to wait.
On the other hand, you might want to buy a seedling in order to feel the true satisfaction of that which taking care for an orchid brings. The completion of the challenge is a reward in and of itself. Furthermore, the boasting rights among others in the gardening circle are just so valuable, and can make you feel as if you truly are worthy to care for an orchid.
The first, and most commonly selected species for people that want to care for an orchid, is the Dendrobium. These plants eventually produce very long sprays of vivid lavender and white, and bring a particular kind of pop to the room. Other gardeners will recognize the plant immediately without seeing the bloom, and its presence in the home brings with it all the mystery and prestige associated with orchids, without as much hassle as some of the others. Their blooming period is very short, however, and usually only lasts around three to four weeks. On the bright side, dendrobium as an excellent choice because its blooms can occur more frequently , and are not entirely confined to the late winter period.
The Paphiopedilum is another very widely known choice to care for an orchid, and is nicknamed the “lady’s slipper”. This moniker comes from the shape of one of the lower parts of the flower, which is modified to form a sort of pouch, similar in configuration to a lady’s shoe. Its purpose is simply to help along the reproductive process by trapping insects and forcing them to crawl past a part of the plant that helps distribute pollinia. It’s green a white mottled blooms are very attractive, but not as flashy as some of the other common orchid choices out there.
Cattleya orchids are probably the most decorative and most clipped orchid in the world, as they are commonly used as the centerpiece of a corsage. However, if you want to care for an orchid instead of wearing it, this is a tragedy, since the blooms can last as long as 8 weeks when left alone, and it is a terrible waste to cut their life short so that the flower can be worn for one night. The pristine and dainty white petals are splashed with a deep maroon or purple in the center, and can really liven up a small room or kitchen. They should be placed in a south window so that bright light can reach them without direct sunlight contact.
There are many other myriad lovely orchid varieties in the world, some of which are harder to maintain and some of which provide only fleeting beauty, but the careful selection of the right breed is the key to the enjoyment of your gardening experience. If you care for an orchid, the whole process of nurturing and taking care for an orchid will reward itself and you will end up with a precious flower that will brighten up your room for weeks.
