home orchid greenhouse
greenhouse and southern exposure?

I have recently concluded that my orchid/cactus collection is outgrowing the windowsills of my home. I have done research into greenhouses and everything seems to fit the lay out of my yard, but the only downside is I don’t have southern exposure. My neighbor has a garage and then a giant tree. The place where i would put the greenhouse is near the tree.
Also i have some eastern and western exposure, but not complete because of the house and barn.

Is it a good idea to buy a greenhouse?

also i tried using a grow light inside but my success was minimal
need to clarify, the neighbor is to the south and my yard is skinny

With a southern exposure you might have found that your greenhouse gets too hot, and you’d have to apply shading in the summer. Having said that, cacti do need a lot of bright light. As many orchids naturally grow attached to trees they would probably need different conditions from the cacti and be OK. Have you actually timed how long the area would receive direct sun? Remember that in winter you will get more light when the leaves are off the tree. If there isn’t enough sun for the cacti perhaps you could just move the orchids and keep the cacti on the sunny windowsills?

When you are measuring how much sun your greenhouse would get remember that there may well be more at bench height than ground level because of the shadows of the buildings.

You will also have to be prepared for a lot of leaf removal and cleaning of the roof lights!

The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School has won worldwide recognition for its treatment of emotionally disturbed children. The school and its continuing work at the University of Chicago have been chronicled in Bruno Bettelheim’s now classic books Love Is Not Enough (1950), Truants from Life (1955), The Empty Fortress (1967), and A Home for the Heart (1972). A Greenhouse for the Mind continues the story of the school, focusing on how its teachers and counselors create an educational environment in which children will want and be able to learn. Jacquelyn Seevak Sanders worked closely with Bettelheim for thirteen years as a counselor and assistant principal and since 1973 has been director of the Orthogenic School. She offers her interpretation of Bettelheim’s vision of a healing world for children, as well as her own ideas and new perspectives from the last decade. In a warm and anecdotal style, Sanders relates the experiences and overarching theoretical principles that have shaped the school and its curriculum. She describes how the staff, schedules, and physical appearance of the school have been developed to create a stable and safe place to learn; how teachers confront their own emotional vulnerability; how the staff accepts the children themselves while disciplining unacceptable behavior; and how the attention of the inattentive can be gained. She chronicles the successes and setbacks of the staff in developing a curriculum that includes reading, science, and physical education, and she exemplifies the school’s principles and practices through a story of an imaginary student’s educational development. In addition to her experience at the Orthogenic School, Sanders has worked with teachers at all levels from nursery schools to universities, and in A Greenhouse for the Mind she passes on what she has learned about educating difficult children–principles that have been helpful to both disturbed children in a unique setting and more typical children in ordinary settings. Her attention to the role of emotions in the learning process adds an often neglected dimension to traditional cognitive and instructional approaches.

Taylor Jane Simon is 18 years old and spending the summer with her mother in Prince Albert National Park. The holiday has been planned so Taylor’s mother can spend time with her latest boyfriend, Danny, and work in the pizza restaurant near the park that Danny runs. Taylor would just as soon stay at home in Saskatoon, but because she suffers from an autistic condition called Asperger’s Syndrome, she can’t stay on her own. Taylor’s mother encourages her daughter to explore the park’s possibilities on her own. For Taylor, whose life experience has been seriously limited, this means facing the test of meeting new people who work in the park’s nature center – and facing it alone. Summer also holds out the possibility of finding her own boyfriend, though Taylor isn’t quite sure what that may involve. What she discovers will change her life forever. Written as an epistolary novel, Wild Orchid is frank but optimistic, literal yet innocent. A courageous wit attends Taylor’s gradual emergence as her own person, and the reader will find the exploration of Taylor’s mind a revealing and heartwarming encounter.
